MAP 1 Context

Establishing context for an AI system: intended purpose, team composition, mission and business value, risk tolerances and system requirements.

MAP 1.1 Intended purpose and context of use

Understanding and documenting intended purposes, beneficial uses, context-specific laws and norms, deployment settings, users, impacts, assumptions and limitations. It is the broadest MAP outcome and the starting point for establishing context.

MAP 1.3 Mission and goals for AI

Understanding and documenting the organization's mission and its goals for the AI technology, and checking the system's purpose against societal values and stated organizational principles.

MAP 1.4 Business value and context of use

Clearly defining the business value or business context of use for an AI system, or re-evaluating it for an existing system, and reconciling it with the organization's stated values and AI principles.

MAP 1.5 Organizational risk tolerances

Determining and documenting organizational risk tolerances for AI, including a maximum tolerance above which a system will not be deployed, and documenting tradeoffs among trustworthiness characteristics.

MAP 1.6 System requirements from AI actors

Eliciting system requirements from relevant AI actors (for example, that the system respect user privacy) and making design decisions that take socio-technical implications into account.
