Planning Apache Superset authentication and data access

Separate application roles from data access

Superset authentication controls who enters the application; database credentials and dataset permissions influence what they can query. Plan both. A user who cannot see a dashboard may still have another query route if connection and role design is broad.

Map sign-in and roles

Use the current Superset documentation to select and test an identity approach. Keep controlled administrator recovery, map offboarding, and separate administration, dataset curation, publishing, and viewing. Test roles with ordinary accounts, not only an administrator session.

Scope sources and datasets

Give source credentials least privilege, identify schemas and tables, and use a reporting target where needed. Curate shared datasets with an owner, definition, freshness note, and sensitivity. Test row and column restrictions with the same identity path real users follow.

Publish and change safely

Separate draft exploration from reviewed dashboards. A shared chart needs a definition owner and review date. Before releases, back up metadata, test sign-in, roles, source connectivity, representative SQL and visual queries, then record the rollback decision.

Access decisions

Make each boundary explicit.

BoundaryDecisionProof
IdentityWho can enter?Offboarding test.
RoleWho can administer or publish?Restricted account test.
SourceWhat data is queryable?Scoped credential test.
DatasetWhat is approved?Owner and definition record.

Common questions

Can all analysts use one role?

Only if their source and publication responsibilities truly match. Broad roles make review weaker.

Does hiding a dashboard secure data?

No. Review database, dataset, and role paths too.

What is an acceptance test?

A basic user signs in, sees approved material, queries intended data, and cannot administer or reach excluded sources.

Plan, validate, run

Inventory people, roles, sources, datasets, and shared dashboards.

Handover checks

Keep current evidence.

Role exercise

Each role has an observed boundary.

Dataset register

Shared datasets have owner and definition.

Release test

Upgrade includes a metadata backup and representative query checks.
